Eastleigh Borough Council Britain honors mountaineer Purja

KATHMANDU, March 15: Mountaineer Nirmal Purja of Annapurna Rural Municipality-3, Myagdi, who has set a world record in the field of mountaineering, has been accorded high honors by the Eastleigh Borough Council of the United Kingdom.

KATHMANDU, March 15: Mountaineer Nirmal Purja of Annapurna Rural Municipality-3, Myagdi, who has set a world record in the field of mountaineering, has been accorded high honors by the Eastleigh Borough Council of the United Kingdom.



During a ceremony at the council building, the mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Cynthia Garton presented Purja with the title of "Freedom of the Borough." Purja had set a world record by successfully scaling 14 peaks above 8,000 in a time period of six months. He also had successfully scaled Mt K2 in Pakistan for the first time in winter.

Honoring him, Mayor Cynthia said that Purja made Eastleigh proud and he is a source of inspiration in the world. “Nirmal has done what no other human being in the world has been able to do,” she said, congratulating him on his journey. While receiving the award, Purja expressed his gratitude to the council for providing the honor. Purja is a resident of Eastleigh Borough.


Purja has also received the prestigious MBE Award from Queen Elizabeth II herself for his outstanding achievement in extreme high-altitude mountaineering.
