Veteran poet Banira Giri passes away

KATHMANDU, May 24: Veteran poet and novelist Banira Giri has died of a heart attack on Sunday night. She was 75 years old.

KATHMANDU, May 24: Veteran poet and novelist Banira Giri has died of a heart attack on Sunday night. She was 75 years old. 



Late Giri had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the past three years and had sought emergency medical care at her own home. She had even tested positive for COVID-19 three weeks ago.

Family sources said she was taken to Civil Hospital on Sunday night on suspicion of a heart attack. Doctors pronounced her dead shortly after she was taken to the hospital. 


Giri has made invaluable contributions in the field of Nepali literature. Her novels Karagar’, 'Nirbandha' and 'Shabdatit Santanu' and her collections of poems 'Mero Aviskar', 'Jeevan: Thayamaru' and 'Euta Euta Jiyundo Jung Bahadur' have been published.


Giri, who received a doctorate degree in poetry from Tribhuvan University, had been teaching at Padma Kanya Campus for a long time. She is also the first woman to complete a doctorate degree in Nepali literature. Family sources informed that the Nepal Army has taken the responsibility of her funeral as the COVID infection was also detected in her body.
