KATHMANDU, Feb 24: Top leaders of the ruling parties CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN (Unified Socialist) have discussed the issue of MCC compact agreement.

CPN (Maoist Center) Central Committee Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Unified Socialist Party Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal and its senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal discussed the agreement today.

During the discussion, Khanal said that his party would not allow the MCC to be ratified through parliament without amendment and would ask the party’s lawmakers to vote against the MCC grant agreement if it is presented in the current form. He said that the Unified Socialist party has maintained that MCC should not be endorsed without being amended from the very beginning.

Khanal said, "The position of the Unified Socialist is clear from the beginning to the end: No MCC. ‘Without any changes or amendment we are against the MCC’. Our two parties have always maintained the same position on the MCC. That means we will not pass the MCC without modification.”

Similarly, CPN (Maoist Center) leader Dev Gurung, who participated in the meeting, said that the issue of voting against MCC was discussed. He also said that he would take part in the MCC discussions in parliament and urged the speaker to remove obstruction in parliament.

The government has already tabled the MCC in parliament for discussion. Despite the government's proposal to pass the MCC grant agreement through parliament, the two ruling parties are opposed to it.

The ruling parties Maoist Center and Unified Socialist have been agitating against the MCC saying that the MCC should not be endorsed by parliament in its current form. Similarly, Rastriya Janamorcha, another ruling party, has also stood against the MCC grant agreement claiming that it is not in the interest of Nepal.
