KATHMANDU, August 16: CPN-UML Chief Whip Bishal Bhattarai has claimed that President Bidya Devi Bhandari sent the Citizenship Bill back to the House of Representatives (HoR) only after consulting with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Speaking at today's meeting of the HoR, Bhattarai said, "The President has given an opportunity to discuss the Citizenship Bill again," he said, adding, “She sent it to parliament not by linking it with the UML, but by understanding the sentiments of the entire country and consulting with the lawyers and, as I have heard, by consulting with the Prime Minister himself."

He objected to “the efforts being made to bring the President into controversy.” He said that since the Citizenship Ordinance and the Bill are not the same, the President should not be dragged into unnecessary dispute.
