Three Sisters’ directed by Rose Schwietz, is being showcased at Kunja Theatre, Thapa Gaun, New Baneshwar since March 9. The play was originally written by the prominent Russian litterateur Anton Chekov a century ago. But it is still relevant today because it explores the true natures of human suffering, hope, betrayal, and love through each character - Prozorovs Sisters, their brother Andrew and many more.

“In the beginning when I read this play, I hated it. But as time passed, each character in the play looked real and relevant to me,” Schwietz said. "That’s why I opted to direct this play that depicts human suffering, love, their work life, dreams and many more aspects of human life.”

The plot is simple, which tries to unfold the hypocrisy of human beings who pretend to be perfect. But deep inside, everyone is suffering just like the main characters – the three Prozorovs sisters. They are not happy with what they are doing in their life, but pretend to be happy.

Masha (played by Kavita Srinivasan) is disappointed with her marriage and has extra-marital affair with lieutenant colonel Vershinina. The youngest sister Irina (played by Samapika Gautam) yearns to shift to Moscow from her hometown as she believed that she will get her true love in Moscow. But, she is stuck in her hometown and can never go to Moscow. Their brother Andrew (played by Bijay Tamrakar) believes that everything would be perfect after marrying Natasha. But he gets stuck in a town with his baby and a job as secretary to the county council. "When I got married, I thought, we will be happy, everyone is happy,” he laments.

However, Schwietz has reshaped the original script by showing same-sex romance between lieutenant colonel Vershinina and Masha. In the original work, lieutenant colonel Vershinin is a male character.

Though the play’s aesthetics need some improvisation here and there, the story and execution in general is commendable.

The play is slated to continue till March 18 except on  Monday.
