Ginari Prasad Gautam is an easily recognizable character at Sundhara, Kathmandu. For the past 10 years, he has been operating his weighing scale on a corner near the bustling bus stand at the heart of the capital city.

Recalling the first time he did this, he stated, “I started by charging Rs 3. But, considering the market inflation, I have increased the price of my service to Rs 10. Anyway, people aren’t keen on checking their weight these days.” A father of four daughters and one son, Gautam also works as a farmer back home in Hetauda. During the farming season, he sets out for his hometown to work in his fields.
