KATHMANDU, Sept 25: The Supreme Court has demanded the government to furnish reasons for issuing an ordinance on political parties. The Constitutional Bench led by Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana on Friday issued a show cause order refusing to issue an interim order.
With this order of the apex court, the ordinance on party division has got continuity. Advocate Arjun Kumar Aryal, Pravesh KC and others had filed a writ petition on August 20 demanding that the apex court to repeal the controversial ordinance.

The government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba had issued the ordinance amending the Political Party Act on August 18. The ordinance allows a split of a political party if a faction in the party is able to garner support of 20 percent of the Central Committee or the Parliamentary Party (PP) members. The government introduced the ordinance immediately after the end of the House of Representatives (HoR) session.
The ordinance paved the way for Madhav Kumar Nepal and Mahantha Thakur to form the CPN (Unified Socialist) and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party-Nepal, respectively, after splitting from the CPN-UML and Janata Samajbadi Party.
