KATHMANDU, Sept 5: At a time when the ruling parties are mulling over extending the life of parliament till the new members to be elected through November 20 polls take oath of office and secrecy, lawmaker belonging to Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Rajendra Lingden has tendered his resignation.

Addressing the parliament meeting on Sunday, Lingden, who is also the Chairman of the RPP, announced his resignation. He argued that it would be immoral on his part to keep receiving salary and other benefits as a lawmaker even after the announcement of the fresh election.

Lingden’s move is widely seen as an attempt to put pressure on the ruling parties not to extend the term of the current parliament. “This is my last presence in the current term of parliament. I am present here to put forth my last views. It is not appropriate to have a parliament functioning and alive this way even after the announcement of fresh elections,” he said.

“Those having faith in democracy believe in free and fair elections. But the elections cannot be free and fair keeping parliament alive. I will not come to parliament henceforth. I had also said this earlier that I will not come to parliament to secure my salary and other benefits as a lawmaker,” he said.
