Rainwater and landslides damage infrastructures worth over Rs 3 billion

KATHMANDU, Aug 3: Floods and landslides during this monsoon season are estimated to have damaged infrastructure worth Rs 3.33 billion.



The Department of Roads has estimated that the natural calamities triggered by the torrential rains caused a damage of more than Rs 2 billion in the highway roads and bridges. The major destruction has been observed in road segments of the Araniko Highway, which is estimated to cost around Rs 1 billion to repair. In the first week of June, heavy rainfall raised the water level in the Bhotekoshi River and local rivulets, seriously damaging the Araniko Highway.

The Besisahar-Chame and Sanfebagar-Martadi road segments are also severely damaged by  the incessant rain. The region was hit hard by the incessant rainfall and landslides in July last week.


Similarly, the wreck in dams and embankment constructed along various rivers cost Rs 330 million. Likewise, the estimated damage to the hydropower projects is around Rs 1 billion, according to the Independent Power Producers Association, Nepal.
