KATHMANDU, June 12: Shakti Bahadur Basnet, who is a Member of Parliament (MP) and also a former minister of the ruling CPN (Maoist Center), has demanded the government immediately remove the provision of running health insurance programs through private companies.
MP Basnet said that the government has mentioned in the budget for the coming fiscal year that a health insurance program will be run through a private company contrary to the spirit of the Health Insurance Act and demanded the government rectify it immediately.

Participating in the discussion on various topics under the Appropriation Bill 2079 in the House of Representatives meeting on Sunday, he also warned the government not to link the health insurance program to basic health services.
Similarly, MP Basnet also complained that the citizens have not been able to get health care even though basic health care has been provided as a fundamental right in the constitution.
