KHOTANG, Aug 24: Khotang Police has continued with its campaign to destroy illegal cannabis planted at commercial farms in the district. As a part of the campaign, a team of district police has destroyed an illegal cannabis farm located at Tuwachung Municipality-5 Durchhim, Haide on Thursday.
Police Inspector Amod Kumar Kherwar of the District Police Office informed Republica that the police team deployed from the Halesi Police Office destroyed around 1,300 cannabis plants at Haibe.
Baitadi police launches cannabis eradication program
The police team destroyed about 600 cannabis plants from Upper and lower Kavre of Tuwachung Municipality-7 Mahadevsthan on August 19. The police raided and destroyed farms at Aiselu Kharka and Patale of Mahadevsthan on August 7 and 9 respectively. The district police also stated that they previously destroyed cannabis farms at Arkhaule, Durchhim, Bahunidanda and Haat danda of Majhuwagadhi Municipality-1.
Halesi, Durchhim, Badahare, Bahunidanda, Mangaltar, Chyasmitar of Tuwachung Municipality used to have huge cannabis farms. However, due to the district police's strict surveillance in these areas, the farming has widely decreased. Since the land is barely fertile for any kind of crop, the farmers in the area go for commercial cannabis farming. According to the farmers, a kilogram of cannabis is sold for at least Rs 5,000. Therefore, although farming and selling of cannabis is challenging, the farmers seem attracted toward the lucrative business of cannabis.
