KATHMANDU, March 4: Prime Minister KP Oli underwent a successful kidney transplant on Wednesday at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Kathmandu, doctors said.

Oli's niece Samikshya Sangraula donated one of her kidneys to the prime minister. Oli, 69, admitted to TUTH on Monday evening to undergo the medical procedures required before the kidney transplant. This is the second time Oli underwent kidney transplant.

"Oli underwent a renal transplant today. The surgery has been successful," said Dr Arun Sayami.

The hospital administration will be organizing a press conference later this afternoon to inform about PM Oli's health condition.

Oli was taken to the operation theatre for the transplant at 10:00 am, according to PM's press advisor Surya Thapa.

It took five hours to complete the renal transplant, according to the doctors.

Provided normal condition, the prime minister will be discharged from the hospital within a week.

A team of doctors led by Premraj Gyawali was involved in the transplant surgery. The chiefs of the urology and nephrology departments at hospitals and senior doctors assisted Dr Gyawali.

Oli’s personal physicians – Dr Dibya Singh Shah and Dr Dilip Sharma – and doctors involved in his previous surgeries were also part of the kidney transplant team.

Last November, Oli had undergone an appendicitis surgery.

A team of doctors including Dr Ramesh Singh Bhandari was involved in the appendicitis surgery.

Ahead of his second kidney transplant, Oli on Tuesday underwent dialysis to remove possible toxins from the blood.

Oli had his first kidney transplant at the Apollo Hospital in India in 2007 and went to Bangkok and Singapore for regular checkups.
