Petroleum smuggling rampant at Nepal-India borders amid soaring prices of fuel

KATHMANDU, Feb 16: Nepal Police on Monday arrested petroleum tanker operators on the charge of smuggling diesel from Nepal to India.

KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Nepal Police on Monday arrested petroleum tanker operators on the charge of smuggling diesel from Nepal to India.



According to the District Police Office, Parsa, police arrested three individuals accused of smuggling 1,060 liters of diesel to India. Shambhu Prasad Mahato from Birgunj Metropolitan-22 and Ashok Pakhrin from Raksirang Rural Municipality-3 and Ramkrishna Upreti from Mahahari Rural Municipality-3 of Makwanpur district are among the accused. They were using a tanker with registration number Na 7 Kha 1511 owned by Shweta Oil Traders, Parsa, to transport fuel across the border.

The cross-border illicit trading of petroleum products is found to be rampant due to their price difference in Nepal and India. According to Nepal Oil Corporation, diesel costs Rs 93.50 per liter in Nepal while it costs Rs 133 per liter in the Indian market. Similarly, petrol is also expensive by Rs 33.89 per liter in India compared to the price in Nepal.
