KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Cyber attacks targeting the websites of government agencies caused disruptions of services in various government offices on Monday.

Executive Director of the National Information Technology Center (NITC), Pradeep Sharma Paudel, said that the websites of some ministries and departments were disrupted on Monday due cyber attacks. He confirmed that there were issues due to the cyber attacks on the system.

“Cyber attackers consistently attempt to impede internet services, often by flooding websites with high traffic,” Paudel said, adding, “This is not a hack but rather a cyber attack, similar to theft or attempted theft.”

Paudel added that when traffic surges, websites may become inaccessible due to system overload. He said it is challenging to determine the origin of the cyber attackers, as they could be operating from within Nepal or using fake devices to appear as if they are located in some other countries.

Paudel stated, “Technicians are actively monitoring the situation. Sometimes, equipment malfunctions might also contribute to disruptions.”

Paudel said that the issues observed on Monday have been resolved.
