KATHMANDU, Dec 22: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the stakeholders concerned to settle the outstanding dues of sugarcane farmers with a sense of urgency.
Issuing a press statement on Monday, the commission said that the fundamental rights of the farmers who are dependent on earnings from their crops have been violated. The commission has urged all stakeholders concerned including the sugar mills, local administration and the government to address the concerns of the farmers and clear their outstanding dues.

“It is the state’s responsibility to give justice to the victim so the government needs to stay alert in this matter,” the statement read, adding: “The commission wants to draw the attention of both government and sugar mills for the effective implementation of laws related to the farmers, address the concern of sugarcane farmers, respect labor and also implement the agreements signed in the past regarding the issue.”
The commission has also urged the government to take action against sugar mills that do not comply with the directives of the government.
