KATHMANDU, May 13: Nepal has entered the quarter-finals of Street Child Nepal World Cup Football tournament held at Moscow on Saturday. It defeated Kenya by 2-0 and Tajikistan by 3-1 to reach the knock-out stage.
A tournament played in a seven-a-side format, Nepal overcame both the teams on Saturday to secure their place in last eight. Nepal topped the Group ‘D’ to qualify for the quarter-finals round.
Squad for Street Child World Cup announced
Nepal’s Pawan Shahi and Santosh Khatri scored in the 2-0 win against Kenya whereas Pawan added further two goals for the day to his name in the 3-1 win against Tajikistan. Skipper Roshan Bhujel was the other goal scorer in the win against Asian team.
The third Street Child World Cup was kicked-off in Moscow ahead of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.
Over two hundred street-connected children from across the world will came together in Moscow. 12 international teams are participating in the tournament played to change the negative perceptions and treatment of street children everywhere. 12 teams were divided into four groups with top two teams from each group reaching the quarter-final round.
Shelter Aashraya Nepal took Nepali boys’ team to Moscow for the seven-a-side football event being organized by Street Child United Initiatives. Shelter Aashraya organized a football league to pick up the players for the World Cup. Funroots Football Academy of Japan supported Shelter Aashraya with 30 pairs of boots and 10 balls.
