KATHMANDU, Aug 11: President of Nepal Bar Association (NBA), Chandeshwor Shrestha, has urged the Judicial Council (JC) to immediately launch training programs for 'incompetent judges.'

NBA President Shrestha urged the JC to bar the incompetent judges from carrying out judicial tasks until they improve their skills.

Organizing a press conference on Monday, Shrestha alleged that the JC appointed a few incompetent individuas as judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts during the last appointment. "Some of the appointed judges do not have a basic understanding of the law," Shrestha added.

He also accused such incompetent judges of consulting relatives and friends before making judgments on court cases.

"We urged Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana to create an environment to train the judges on judicial issues." Shrestha briefed the media about the 17-point recommendation submitted to Chief Justice Rana. The NBA’s written recommendations states that there are some judges in the Supreme and High Court who lack sufficient knowledge and skill to carry out their duties.

"We are confident that the apex court will introduce an automated system in the Supreme Court."

The NBA also recommended the JC to immediately form a mechanism to look into corruption and irregularities in the judiciary. General Secretary Leelamani Paudel recommended abolishing the parliamentary hearing system.
