Devkota, from the Nepal Socialist Party (NSP), contested the election in Gorkha 2 (A) on the Maoist Center symbol. Despite a whip from the Maoist parliamentary party, he voted in favor of CM Pandey on June 10  and subsequently became the energy minister.

Devkota claimed that as he belonged to a different political party, the whips issued by the Maoist Center don’t apply to him.
