KATHMANDU, Aug 31: Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank Chiranjivi Nepal has urged media persons to be aware of the negative implications of the information communication technology as the dissemination of false information through social media platforms has posed a great challenge to the entire society in recent times.

Addressing the 20th general assembly of the Society of Economic Journalists Nepal (SEJON) in the capital on Saturday, he advised the media-owners and media persons to spread genuine information to the people through social media. He warned of the situation in which people may regard every piece of information available on social media to be authentic if the concerned stakeholders fail to take the precaution on time.

"Better you have to prioritize the news that may give positive message and optimism among the public and encourage the government to bring some changes to existing policies,” Governer Nepal said adding, “It’s high time for Nepali media fraternity to be aware of negative implications generated due to the use of advanced information, communication and technology.”

Former Chairperson of SEJON Pratik Pradhan urged the media persons to become the voice of the people. "Media's role will be more important if the judiciary and legislative both are controlled by the executive," he said.

"There is no alternative to strengthening economic journalism," he opined. SEJON is the organization of economic journalists in Nepal.

The ongoing general assembly of SEJON will pick new leadership for the next two years.
