KATHMANDU, Oct 27: The Conflict Victims Common Platform (CVCP) has urged political parties not to field any individual involved in grave human rights violations as candidates for the parliamentary and provincial elections.

The organization has also asked the parties and other agencies concerned to cancel the candidacies of any human rights violators who have already been fielded as candidates for the first phase of the elections.

“The conflict victims' society strongly demands that political parties cancel the candidacies of grave human rights violators, who are already nominated as candidates for the first phase elections, and avoid fielding such individuals as candidates in the second phase of the polls,” said the organization in its statement issued on Friday. It has said such moves have become imperative for ensuring the rule of law, ending impunity, ensuring good governance and vetting in public posts and political parties.

The CVCP has asked the National Human Rights Commission, civil society and other members of the public to take serious initiatives to stop such candidates from being elected.

“This society urges all the political parties, state agencies and civil society to bar those involved in criminal activities, corrupt invididuals, and gangsters from becoming candidates in the election,” read the statement.
