KATHMANDU, Nov 10: The government has decided to revoke its earlier decision to impose a 10 percent customs tax on the import of all kinds of books.

A cabinet meeting held on Monday made a decision to this effect amid criticisms from various quarters for the past several months, cabinet sources said. Then Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada had introduced the provision to impose a 10 percent tax on all books imported from India and other countries in the budget of fiscal year 2019/20.

The decision had drawn flak as most criticized this as an attempt to restrict learning. Although Nepali printing industries stood in its favor, students, publishers, and booksellers have opposed this move arguing that the decision had a huge impact on Nepali academia.

The decision to revoke customs tax on the import of all kinds of books comes shortly after Bishnu Paudel assumed office as Finance Minister.
