KATHMANDU, Sept 23: The Food Management and Trading Company is selling 12 tons of dried onions seized during market inspection from Thursday.

According to the company officials, the state-owned enterprise will be selling the vegetable at Rs 60 per kg. Retailers in Kathmandu are selling the onion as much as Rs 130 per kg after India decided to ban exports of all varieties of this agricultural produce earlier last week.

Of the amount, Rs 52 a kg will be deposited in the government treasury while the company will retain the rest of the amount to manage its expenses liability.

The onions were seized from the unscrupulous traders from the stores operating in Kalimati and Balkhu based vegetable markets. The traders were found hoarding onions to sell at exorbitantly higher prices just two days after the Indian government announced a ban on export of onions from India.

In the second week of September, the government’s market inspection team took action against seven vendors found to be selling onions at more than Rs 100 per kg. Among them, four vendors were from the Kalimati market and three others were from the vegetable market in Balkhu. Of them, some of the traders were found hiding a large quantity of onions to create artificial shortage in the market and sell them at exorbitantly higher prices.
