KATHMANDU, April 27: The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has initiated discussions with the stakeholders in its bid to make the country's medical science education more systematic and qualitative.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Devendra Poudel on Tuesday met with the office-bearers of the Medical Education Commission, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Kathmandu University, Purbanchal University, Nepal Sanskrit University and others, and discussed promoting systematic and quality medical science education in the country.

Minister Poudel convened the meeting at a time when concerns are being raised over the fact that as much as Rs 98 billion is remitted abroad from Nepal every year through Nepali students pursuing medical education in foreign countries. They also discussed improving medical education in Nepal.

On the occasion, Minister Poudel said, “Students’ attraction to pursue medical education is increasing in the country. Nepali students studying medical education abroad have been practicing after returning to Nepal. Let’s make a provision for them to study and take exams in Nepal itself.”

He was of the view that the money currently flowing out of the country for medical education would remain within the country if the Nepali students currently going abroad for medical education could be taught within the country. For that, we have to improve the quality of medical education, he added.

Minister Poudel also expressed his discontent over the lack of skilled human resources in the field though their records were sufficient in numbers. “Let’s focus on quality education by increasing the criteria to compete for opportunity. While doing so, the skilled human resource should not stay unemployed,” according to Minister Poudel.

“We have been shrinking in the name of regulating education. Students, except for limited ones, are deprived of studying in the country due to some complexities in Acts and laws,” the Minister observed.
