KATHMANDU, JUNE: While rejecting the claims made by a group of former lawmakers of the CPN (Maoist Center) that the party is already illegal as it failed to hold its general convention on time, the Election Commission (EC) has said that the CPN (Maoist Center) is a legal entity.

A meeting of the EC's office-bearers on Monday concluded that there are no valid grounds to raise questions about the legality of the Maoist Center as a political party.

Advocate Saroj Budhathoki on behalf of former Maoist Center lawmakers had filed a petition at the EC  demanding the election body to disband the Maoist Center apparently to make the decision of the Maoist Center party to sack them from the post of lawmakers invalid.

Those demanding the EC disband the party over its failure to hold its general convention on time include Ram Bahadur Thapa, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Prabhu Sah, Mani Thapa and Lekharaj Bhatta. They were sacked by the party as they chose to be part of the UML after the erstwhile Nepal Communist Party (NCP) saw a vertical split after Prime Minister KP Oli dissolved parliament.

The EC in its decision has said that there is no need to take any action over the petition since the Maoist Center is found to have been registered with the EC after fulfilling all constitutional and legal conditions.
