The government had registered a bill to amend the Nepali Citizenship Act, 2063 BS in the House of Representatives on August 7, 2018. The State Affairs Committee had submitted the bill along with a report to the House of Representatives on June 23, 2020. The government withdrew the bill on July 8, 2022 and registered another bill at the Parliament Secretariat on the same day.

According to the Secretariat of the Home Minister, Khand met Chairman Dahal today as a part of a meeting with leaders of various political parties on behalf of the government to reach a consensus on the bill. Similarly, on Sunday evening, Khand met Subash Chandra Nemwang, deputy leader of the main opposition party CPN-UML, at his residence in Baluwatar.

The government is confident that the new citizenship bill will address the current citizenship issues. If passed, the government expects the bill to help grant citizenship to millions of youths with no citizenships.
