KATHMANDU, April 22: Nepalgunj, a city in the south-western part of the country, has witnessed a sharp rise in new coronavirus cases in the wake of the onset of the second wave of the viral infection in the country triggered by a new variant.
As many as 337 new cases were detected through 607 PCR tests conducted in the past 24 hours. Tej Oli, the focal person of the District COVID-19 Crisis Management Center (DCCMC) shared that 203 males and 134 females tested positive for the virus. Of the cases identified through the tests conducted at Bheri Hospital, Nepalgunj Medical College, Bageshwari Lab and Jamunaha Health Desk, 258 are from Banke district alone.

With this, the district’s COVID-19 casetally has jumped to 6,114. The district has so far reported 67 fatalities – 41 males and 26 females -- linked with the viral disease.
There are 1,266 patients in the district receiving treatment at various isolation centers including Bheri Hospital (139), Nepalgunj Medical College (65), Hotel White House (12) and COVID-19 hospital set up by Kohalpur Municipality (5). Similarly, 1,181 others are staying isolated at their homes, according to the DCCMC.
Lockdown continues
Meanwhile, Nepalgunj Sub Metropolitan City continues to be under a lockdown imposed by the district administration in view of the rising risk of the coronavirus. The prohibitory order that began on Wednesday midnight will continue until April 28.
