IN PICTURES: Leftist forces unite after 54 years

KATHMANDU, May 17: The major communist parties of Nepal, CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) have merged after 54 years on Thursday. The merged communist Party of Nepal has organized a unification announcement program at Rastriya Sabha Griha on Thursday evening.

KATHMANDU, May 17: The major communist parties of Nepal, CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) have merged after 54 years on Thursday. The merged communist Party of Nepal has organized a unification announcement program at Rastriya Sabha Griha on Thursday evening.



Delivering the welcome speech in the program leader Janardhan Sharma stated that the merger was a historical move and commitment of both the parties to bring prosperity in the nation.  He said, “The unified communist party will lead the nation to the path of economic prosperity and development.”

Speaking at the program, Pushpa Kamal Dahal commemorated Madan Bhandari, veteran leader of UML as he stated that it was his wish to unify the party on this day itself. Attempts to unify the parties on the birth anniversary of Lenin and Marx were delayed earlier. In between, probabilities of merger was doubtful until the needs of MC were addressed; merger on the basis of equality and mentioning people’s war in the new party’s statute.


The communist party was formed 69 years and 25 days ago in Nepal. Addressing the announcement program, senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal stated that the unification has succeeded with a great struggle.
