CHITWAN, June 3: The census of an endangered wild animal Gaur, locally known as Gauri Gai, has been put off in Chitwan National Park (CNP).
According to the CNP officials, the census of Gaur that began on May 11 has been postponed after wild tuskers posed obstruction in their works.
CNP’s Information Officer and Assistant Conservation Officer Lokendra Adhikari shared that the wild tuskers caused obstruction when the count had almost come to the final stage.

“Counting was taking place by dividing the CNP-based habitat of Gauri Gai in 14 different blocks”, Adhikari said, adding, “The counting was completed in 12 blocks and was still underway in the remaining two blocks. It has now come to a halt with the obstruction posed by wild elephants”.
Adhikari further said they are not sure when they will be able to resume the counting work again.
The CNP had mobilized 22 elephants and 60 enumerators to take stock of endangered and protected wildlife species including Gaur for internal monitoring and count.
According to the 2016 count, there were altogether 473 Gauri Gai in Parsa National Park and Chitwan National Park. CNP alone had 368 Gauri Gai out of the total count.
