Campaign against alcoholism necessary: Home Minister Thapa

KATHMANDU, Oct 12: Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has insisted on the need of a campaign against social evils like drugs abuse, alcoholism and violence against girls and women.

KATHMANDU, Oct 12: Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has insisted on the need of a campaign against social evils like drugs abuse, alcoholism and violence against girls and women. 



Speaking at an interaction programme on ban on drugs abuse, alcoholism, violence against girls and women and on traffic management' organised here today by the Ministry, he described such misconducts barriers to development and prosperity, underlining the need of overcoming them. "Building of a prosperous Nepal is never possible until all sorts of crimes are controlled."

Stating that development, prosperity, good governance and peace were the optimum state of socialism, he sought the collaboration between the people and the government to meet the goals of socialism. "Anti-peace forces are still active in the society and we must be aware of it." 


As he said, 70 percent women violence cases are because of alcoholism and protest and campaign against such ill practice are essential within from the local levels are necessary to combat the violence. Secretary at the Home Minister, Prem Kumar Rai, highlighted need of efforts from the local level to control alcohol abuse and regulate and systematise its business. He went on to say the government was seriously working to minimize the cases of violence in the society. 


Kathmandu Metropolis mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya said the Metropolis had installed closed circuit cameras at various locations to check out the cases of untoward violence. He added that the Metropolis was ready to cooperate with the traffic police for traffic management in the town, by finding a solution to the issue of haphazard parking. 


Kathmandu Chief District Officer, Ram Prasad Acharya, apprised the programme of efforts underway to control alcoholism while Chief of Metropolitan Traffic Division, Basanta Panta, briefed the gathering about measures taken for traffic management.
