Ban on plastic material of less than 40 microns

KATHMANDU, July 6: The government has banned the use of plastic materials thinner than 40 microns.

KATHMANDU, July 6: The government has banned the use of plastic materials thinner than 40 microns.



Secretary of the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, Dr Krishna Hari Pushkar issued a statement and informed that plastic materials thinner than 40 microns have been banned.

He asked not to use plastic bags and plastic materials and if it is necessary, to use those thicker than 40 microns.  


He also requested the federal, provincial and local governments to support the government's campaign to ban plastic materials thinner than 40 microns.  


According to the Waste Management Baseline Survey 2022, it has been mentioned that the proportion of plastic waste among household waste is 12 percent, the proportion of plastic waste among institutional sector waste is 21 percent and the proportion of plastic waste among commercial sector waste is 22 percent.


It is mentioned in the statement issued by Secretary Dr Pushkar that greenhouse gasses are emitted due to plastic waste and that it  becomes a factor behind the death of aquatic animals. Similarly, the statement says that toxic gasses such as dioxin are released into the atmosphere when plastic is burned, water sources dry up because plastic waste does not decompose, garbage is seen everywhere, etc.
