NEW DELHI, Aug. 3: As many as seven Naxals were killed Saturday in a fierce gunfight with government forces in the central Indian state of Chattisgarh, media reports said quoting the Indian police.

NEW DELHI, Aug. 3: As many as seven Naxals were killed Saturday in a fierce gunfight with government forces in the central Indian state of Chattisgarh, media reports said quoting the Indian police.



The gunfight broke out inside forests near Sitagota village of Rajnandgaon district, about 157 km west of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh, Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday.

"This morning at around 6:00 (local time) a gunfight broke out between Naxals and police in the forest area near Sitagota village here," Xinhua quoted a police official as saying. "During the stand-off, seven Naxals were killed in the anti-Naxal operation and some arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot."


According to a police official, police teams cordoned off the forest area on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of Naxals in the area.


Police did not suffer any casualty in the stand-off, officials said. Reports said the gunfight lasted for several hours.
