43 Nepali migrant workers languishing in Indian jail

BAITADI, Feb 15: As many as 43 Nepali migrant workers have been languishing in an Indian jail for the last eight months. Indian police incarcerated them on the charge of staging a protest demanding salary and other facilities including allowances, leave and overtime.

BAITADI, Feb 15: As many as 43 Nepali migrant workers have been languishing in an Indian jail for the last eight months. Indian police incarcerated them on the charge of staging a protest demanding salary and other facilities including allowances, leave and overtime.



The detainees were working for an under-construction hydropower company based in the Indian State of Himanchal.

According to the Indian police, the Nepali migrant workers were held for participating in the strike led by the Central Trade Union of India, the sister organization of The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM), on March 2016.


Patel Engineering Company based in Kinnor District has been constructing a Samthang Hydropower with 450 megawatt electricity for which the Nepali migrant workers were working.


The Nepali detainees are from 14 districts of Nepal including 11 from Baitadi, nine from Kanchanpur, four from Kailali and three from Chitwan.
