MELAMCHI, June 29: Around 15 months into the earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 and damaged hundreds of houses and structures, the victims are still facing difficulties for want of a roof over their heads.

Although the government claims that the National Reconstruction Authority, a government body assigned to carry out the post-quake reconstruction, started distributing grant amounts of Rs 200,000 to each family victimised by the quake to rebuild damaged house, the succour is yet to reach many genuine quake survivors.

The government's apathy has made the quake victims suffer much as some of them are still living in tents or huts for want of proper rehabilitation.

On the other hand, tired of long waiting for government assistance, some who can afford it have started rebuilding their damaged houses on their own.

Quake survivors of Melamchi have similar story to share. They complained that they are sure to brave this monsoon as well that already began without government succour anywhere to be seen so far.

The quake survivors faced two monsoons and a winter since the disaster struck.

"I am finding it very difficult to fight this monsoon as my roof leaks. And this means we are left to stay awake the whole night," said a quake victim.

The quake survivors are left with no options but to embrace their problems at least for the time being as most of them are farmers and busy in their farmland since the paddy plantation has started. RSS
