KATHMANDU, June 8: Janata Samajbadi Party, which was formed after the merger between Rastriya Janata Party Nepal and Samajbadi Party in late April, was registered at the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday.

The newly-formed party was registered at the election body yesterday after the party leaders forged a consensus on the names of its office bearers. A group of the party reached the EC headquarters, Kantipath, to register the party Sunday afternoon.

Mahantha Thakur and Upendra Yadav have been picked as the party's two executive chairmen and Baburam Bhattarai, Ashok Rai and Rajendra Mahato have been named senior leaders of the party.

The remaining office-bearers will be decided later, according to party leaders. The registration number of the new party at the election body is 1392.

According to the party's senior leader Mahato, a 53-member executive committee of the party has been formed.

The party will have a 151-member political committee and a 701-member central committee.

Today was the last day for the party to be registered at the EC. On April 22, the party leaders announced the merger between the two parties and the very next day they informed the EC that they would register the new party called Janata Samajbadi Party. According to the Act related to Political Parties, after the declaration of merger of two or more parties, they should produce all relevant documents before the EC within 45 days. Today was the 45th day since they announced their merger.

The unification deal between the two parties came barely two days after President Bidya Devi Bhandari issued an ordinance, making it easier for political parties to split. Amid criticism, the ordinance was scrapped by the government after a few days.
