TEHRAHUM, June 22:  Though the electoral law requires parties to field women candidates accounting for 40 percent of their total candidates, there is not even a single woman among the candidates they have fielded in 43 wards of Tehrathum district.

Due to an electoral alliance forged among parties in Phedap Rural Municipality, those women who were supposed to be fielded as a candidate have been deprived of an opportunity to contest the local level polls slated for June 28.

According to political analysts, such a situation arose out of the fact that none of the parties that forged an electoral alliance fielded female candidate in an effort to woo each other.

Local female leaders have bemoaned the gender imbalance in the fielding of candidates. They have said that the electoral alliance has deprived them of their legal right to contest the polls.

774 persons have registered their candidacies for 227 positions in Teharathum district.

A total of 60,721persons are eligible for casting their votes in the district. There are 57 polling stations and 85 polling centres in Teharathum.
